I believe within the motion, written by the member for Ottawa South, credit is given to the accomplishment of the Conservative government for achieving in Copenhagen an accord for which Canada can be proud and for which, after 13 years of inaction by the Liberal Party that tarnished our reputation as stewards of the environment, Canada can now return to its natural proud post as a great steward of the environment.

TAKES NOTE of the recent publication of the Communication from the European Commission "Reducing the climate impact of aviation"; WELCOMES the emphasis the Commission has placed on tackling this serious and growing problem, and LOOKS FORWARD to debating its contents in December 2005. LOOKING FORWARD to the historic first meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol and the adoption of the Marrakech Accords, including the immediate operationalisation of the compliance mechanism; TAKING ACCOUNT of the aspirations of parties expressed at the preparatory meeting of ministers in Ottawa; WELCOMES the commitment at the June 2005 EU-Canada summit to delivering a positive outcome at Montreal.

It is quite timely that BNFL is making applications to the British Government to deal with how much radioactive materials it can discharge into the Irish Sea. I say this because 15 September – Wednesday of this week when there will be a lot happening – is the deadline which has been given by the Radioactive Discharges Commission of the Ottawa Convention for the British Government to come up with proposals as to how best it is going to substantially reduce the discharge of radioactive substances into the marine environment.
