‘the Union’s rights’ means the international trade rights of which the Union may avail itself under international trade rules; in this context, ‘international trade rules’ are primarily those established under the auspices of the WTO and laid down in the Annexes to the WTO Agreement, but they can also be those laid down in any other agreement to which the Union is a party and which sets out rules applicable to trade between the Union and third countries;

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) (‘the Convention’) to which 178 countries, including all Member States, are a party, is a major international environmental instrument aiming to protect endangered species of fauna and flora through controls on international trade in specimens of those species.
La convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d'extinction (CITES) (ci-après dénommée «convention»), à laquelle 178 États, dont tous les États membres, sont parties, est un important instrument international dans le domaine de l'environnement qui vise à protéger les espèces de faune et de flore menacées d'extinction par le contrôle du commerce international des spécimens de ces espèces.

1. Welcomes the conclusion under the auspices of the United Nations of a legally binding Arms Trade Treaty on international trade in conventional arms after seven years of long negotiations; recalls that the Treaty aims to establish the highest possible common international standards for regulating the international trade in conventional arms, and to prevent and eradicate the illicit trade in conventional arms for the purpose of contributing to international and regional peace, security and stability and the reduction of human suffering; believes that the effective implementation of the Treaty may significantly contribute to enhancing respect for international human rights and humanitarian law worldwide; welcomes the substantial contribution of civil society organisations from the inception to the adoption of the Arms Trade Treaty;

Another related possibility to improve traceability would be to expand considerably the use of catch certificates for fish that enters international trade. Two RFMOs have already adopted such schemes and the EU should promote certificates as a general tool to combat trade in IUU fish. The ultimate objective should be to develop a global catch certification scheme, while avoiding creating a non-tariff barrier to trade. It is difficult to see how countries could argue in favour of trade in IUU fish, but there were loud voices in the EU against the IUU regulation when it was first proposed.
Pour améliorer la traçabilité, une autre possibilité consisterait à élargir considérablement l'utilisation des certificats de capture pour les poissons écoulés sur le marché international. Deux ORGP ont d'ores et déjà adopté de tels programmes et l'UE devrait promouvoir les certificats comme un instrument de portée générale pour lutter contre le commerce des produits de la pêche INN. L'objectif ultime devrait être la mise en place d'un programme mondial de certification des captures, tout en évitant la création d'entraves non tarifaires aux échanges. Si l'on voit mal comment les pays pourraient militer en faveur de la commercialisation des produits de la pêche INN, il convient de rappeler que des voix se sont fortement fait entendre dans l'UE contre le règlement INN lorsque celui-ci a été initialement proposé.

– (FR) Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, I, too, would like to begin by thanking my colleagues in the Committee on International Trade and, in particular, the shadow rapporteurs from the various groups for their cooperation in the drafting of this third report on a related topic. Today, we are able, thanks to this cooperation, to present a set of innovative, concrete proposals to move corporate social responsibility forward within the framework of EU trade policy.
− Monsieur le Président, Monsieur le Commissaire, chers collègues, je voudrais moi aussi commencer par remercier les collègues de la commission du commerce international et, en particulier, les rapporteurs fictifs des différents groupes pour leur coopération dans l’élaboration de ce troisième rapport sur un sujet voisin, et qui nous permet de présenter aujourd’hui un ensemble de propositions novatrices et concrètes pour faire avancer la responsabilité sociale des entreprises, dans le cadre de la politique commerciale de l’Union européenne.

The Madrid Summit stressed that the top common priority of both regions is to strengthen the multilateral system on the basis of the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.In particular, we underline the importance of the WTO as the main forum for promotion of trade liberalisation and the establishment of the basic rules and disciplines for the necessary regulation of the international trade system. The removal of trade barriers, based on stronger more transparent multilateral rules, allows everyone to benefit from the comparative advantages of their respective economies and fosters competitive integration in world trade and reduces the scope for protectionism The Doha Development Agenda launched in 2001 should bring benefits to all WTO members by increasing international trade and economic growth.

– (EL) Madam President, the WTO is the main imperialist mechanism which imposes the terms of the multinationals and the full liberalisation and opening of the markets on international trade. The result is the widening of the gap between rich and poor, despite the growth in international trade.
- (EL) Madame la Présidente, l’OMC représente le principal mécanisme impérialiste qui impose au commerce international les conditions des multinationales, la libéralisation totale et l’ouverture des marchés, creusant ainsi le fossé qui sépare les riches et les pauvres, et ce, malgré le développement des échanges internationaux.

The progressive spread of a social awareness and international recognition of human rights, free movement of goods, people, capital and services could be seen as some of the positive effects but cultural levelling and homogenisation, abandonment of labour resources, at times undermining of labour rights, environmental damage and widening the gap between the global concentration of private wealth and extreme poverty, are negative impacts. There is a role for international regulations , multinational and trade institutions to mitigate the negative effects of globalisation through a new approach which places national development priorities, investor obligations and transparency at the centre, to ensure the benefits of international trade and investment are more equitably distyributed and reach the poorest people.

Council Regulation (EC) No 1992/2003 of 27 October 2003 amending Regulation (EC) No 40/94 on the Community trade mark to give effect to the accession of the European Community to the Protocol relating to the Madrid Agreement concerning the international registration of marks adopted at Madrid on 27 June 1989 [Official Journal L 296 of 14.11.2003]. These two texts are designed to establish a link between the Community trade mark system and the international trade mark registration system of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) The aim is to enable enterprises to obtain protection for their trade mark on the basis of the filing of a single application, not only throughout the Community, as a Community trade mark, but also in countries which had signed the Madrid Agreement (such as China).
