The project will provide a reliable road link which can cope with international heavy traffic between the road networks of the Central and Northern Corridors linking Zaire, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi to the coast through Tanzania and Kenya.

The Northern Corridor is the link joining the land-locked countries of Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Eastern Zaïre to the port of Mombasa in Kenya.

There are some sections of the project which require investigation of their future financing requirements. These include: o the link between the two main stations in Dublin; o the Belfast - Larne section; o requirements for rolling stock; o access to ports in Dublin and Belfast; o rail freight requirements in Northern Ireland; o requirements for station upgrading and the possible role of private sector financing; - feasibility studies will be undertaken of the "peace effect" in Northern Ireland on future traffic on the whole corridor and in particular on the Dublin - Belfast section; - further studies might also be required for parts of the corridor in Northern Ireland and the possibility of adding of the Dublin - Rosslare section to the corridor; - the Cohesion Fund, the ERDF, DG VII, the EIB and the private banks represented at the seminar have undertaken to examine further financing possibilities for the missing sections or additional work to be undertaken on the corridor; - the industry and business groups represented at the seminar emphasised the importance of road transport on the Cork - Dublin - Belfast corridor.
