The vessel ‘Dolphin’, which is currently included in the Union list, has been removed from the lists established by the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC), the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) and the South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO), since it had been scrapped.

The Union has acceded to the following instruments, establishing regional organisations, whose activities are also covered by the Agency’s objectives: the Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area (Helsinki Convention as revised in 1992) ; the Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution (Barcelona Convention) , and its 1995 revision and to a number of protocols thereto; the Agreement for cooperation in dealing with pollution of the North Sea by oil and other harmful substances (Bonn Agreement) ; the Convention for the protection of the marine environment of the North-East Atlantic (OSPAR Convention) ; the Cooperation Agreement for the protection of the coasts and waters of the north-east Atlantic against pollution, signed on 17 October 1990 (Lisbon Agreement) , with the Additional Protocol thereto, signed on 20 May 2008, which have not yet entered into force .

For instance, in accordance with United Nations resolutions 61/105 and 64/72 both Regional Fisheries Management Organisations for the North Atlantic, the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission and the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation have closed fishing areas for bottom trawling not only to ensure the long-term sustainability of deep sea fish stocks but also to preserve vulnerable marine ecosystems including sponges and coral.
Ainsi, conformément aux résolutions 61/105 et 64/72 des Nations unies, les organisations régionales de gestion des pêches de l’Atlantique Nord, la Commission des pêches de l'Atlantique du Nord-Est et l’Organisation des pêcheries de l'Atlantique du Nord‑Ouest ont toutes trois interdit le chalutage de fond dans certaines zones de pêche, non seulement pour garantir la durabilité à long terme des stocks de poissons pélagiques, mais également pour préserver des écosystèmes marins vulnérables, notamment des éponges et des coraux.

(5) This Regulation should establish technical measures for the North East Atlantic, the Eastern Central Atlantic and the waters off the coasts of French departments of Guyana, Martinique, Guadalupe and Reunion that come under the sovereignty or jurisdiction of France only, as technical measures for the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean are established in Council Regulation (EC) No 2187/2005 of 21 December 2005 concerning the conservation of fishery resources through technical measures in the Baltic Sea, the Belts and the Sound, amending Regulation (EC) No 1434/98 and repealing Regulation (EC) No 88/98[20] and in Council Regulation (EC) No 1967/2006 of 21 December 2006 concerning management measures for the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources in the Mediterranean Sea, amending Regulation (EEC) No 2847/93 and repealing Regulation (EC) No 1626/94[21], respectively.
(5) Il convient que le présent règlement n’établisse de mesures techniques que pour l’Atlantique du Nord-Est, l’Atlantique Centre-Est et les eaux situées au large des côtes des départements français de la Guyane, de la Martinique, de la Guadeloupe et la Réunion qui relèvent de la souveraineté ou de la juridiction de la France, étant donné que les mesures techniques concernant la mer Baltique et la mer Méditerranée sont établies respectivement au règlement (CE) n° 2187/2005 du Conseil du 21 décembre 2005 relatif à la conservation, par des mesures techniques, des ressources halieutiques dans les eaux de la mer Baltique, des Belts et de l’Øresund, modifiant le règlement (CE) n° 1434/98 et abrogeant le règlement (CE) n° 88/98[20], et au règlement (CE) n° 1967/2006 du Conseil du 21 décembre 2006 concernant des mesures de gestion pour l’exploitation durable des ressources halieutiques en Méditerranée et modifiant le règlement (CEE) n° 2847/93 et abrogeant le règlement (CE) n° 1626/94[21].

Complying with OSPAR: The Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North East Atlantic [8] aims to prevent and eliminate pollution and to protect the maritime area of the North East Atlantic against the harmful effects of human activities (land-based sources, off-shore sources, dumping and incineration of wastes).
