Joint report of the Council and the Commission of 6 March 2003 on adequate and sustainable pensions [PDF] This report is based on the Member States' national strategy reports of September 2002, in which they present how they are trying to meet the objectives of adequate and sustainable pensions and modernisation of pension systems in the long term.
Ce rapport s'appuie sur les rapports de stratégie nationale présentés par les États membres en septembre 2002. Il analyse comment les États membres comptent faire face aux défis d'assurer des pensions adéquates et financièrement viables, et de moderniser les systèmes de retraite dans une perspective à long terme.

(8) RECOGNISES the need also to modernise occupational pension schemes and notes that the Social Partners have been invited, on the basis of the Commission's consultation document under Article 138 of the Treaty on the portability of occupational pensions, to consider an approach to reducing obstacles to mobility.

On that occasion, 11 common objectives were set covering the adequacy of pensions, their financial sustainability and the modernisation of pension systems to adapt them to changes on the labour market and in society, notably to ensure that they cater well for the needs of women.

In the Conclusions of the Laeken European Council of 13/14 December 2001 it was stated that "The adequacy of pensions, the sustainability and modernisation of pension systems and the improvement of access to occupational pension schemes are all of particular importance for dealing with the increasing needs".
