whereas making farming more sustainable is becoming an ever more important objective for operators, given the need to control costs in order to safeguard incomes, on the one hand, and to respond to the depletion and degradation of natural resources (soil, water, air and biodiversity) on the other; whereas agriculture accounts for 70 % of the world’s fresh water use, and whereas water availability is already a major limitation on agricultural production in some regions of the EU and globally; whereas the use of drinking water in agriculture can be significantly reduced by the effective use of modern irrigation techniques and by growing crops suited to the local climate.
considérant que l'amélioration du niveau de durabilité en agriculture se profile comme un objectif toujours plus important pour les opérateurs, compte tenu de la nécessité de contenir les coûts pour préserver les revenus d'une part, et de répondre à la raréfaction et à la dégradation des ressources naturelles (terre, eau, air et biodiversité); considérant que l'agriculture compte pour 70 % dans l'usage des ressources en eau de la planète et que la disponibilité de l'eau est déjà une limitation majeure de la production agricole dans certaines régions de l'Union et du monde; considérant que les quantités d'eau potable utilisées pour l'agriculture peuvent être considérablement réduites grâce à des techniques modernes d'irrigation et à des cultures adaptées aux conditions climatiques.
