In particular they will work jointly to support: - a greater recognition of the political and economic importance of maritime industries - the promotion of strong and competitive maritime industries (including services) of the European Union - the recognition of the need for fair and equitable market conditions by avoiding distortions caused by subsidies or any other measure - an increased level of cooperation between maritime interests and the identification of measures which are of benefit to them - the protection of the maritime environment including the elimination of substandard vessels and the promotion of high standards for ship operation and maintenance - the continued development of measures which encourage the construction of environmentally friendly, efficient and safe ships - the expansion and development of short sea shipping particularly within the framework of a trans-European network; this includes the recognition of the economic and environmental advantages of this alternative - centres of excellence concerned with the education and training of people and measures to maintain a technological lead - the development of measures which achieve a proper recognition of the importance of marine resources as a future supply of energy, minerals and food for the European Union.
