To that end, the international task force set up by the Commission following the Baia Mare cyanide spill into the River Tisza will shortly (this summer) issue a report “The Inventory of the Potentially Polluting Sources in the Somes-Tisa Hydrographic Basin”, listing 'high risk sites' in the mining and extractive industries covering Romania, Hungary, Ukraine and Slovakia.

The Baia Mare Task force was set up by the European Commission in the aftermath of the cyanide spill from a gold mine in Baia Mare in Romania in January 2000 polluting the rivers Tisa and Danube.

To tighten existing EU legislation on major industrial hazards, the European Commission has adopted a proposal for a Directive extending the scope of the so-called Seveso II Directive. The proposal is the regulatory follow-up to the cyanide spill into the Tisza river that occurred in Baia Mare/Romania following a damburst of a tailings pond, causing considerable environmental damage, and to the fireworks explosion in Enschede/Netherlands, causing death and injury to numerous persons.
Afin de renforcer la législation européenne concernant les risques d'accidents majeurs de certaines activités industrielles, la Commission européenne a adopté une proposition de directive élargissant le champ d'application de la directive Seveso II. Cette proposition est une réaction des législateurs après le déversement de cyanure dans la Tisza, consécutif à la rupture d'une digue entourant un bassin de stériles, à Baia Mare, en Roumanie, qui a considérablement pollué l'environnement, et après l'explosion survenue dans un entrepôt d'articles pyrotechniques à Enschede, aux Pays-Bas, qui a fait de nombreuses victimes et blessé un grand nombre de personnes.

The cyanide spill into the Tisza river, following a damburst of a tailings pond in Baia Mare/Romania in January this year and a similar accident in Aznalcóllar/Spain in 1998, where a damburst poisoned the environment of the Coto Doñana National Park, raised questions as to the effectiveness of Community policies intended to prevent such disasters. They highlighted the need for a more focused environmental policy in this area.
La contamination de la rivière Tisza par du cyanure consécutivement à une rupture de digue d'un bassin de stériles à Baia Mare en janvier dernier, et l'accident semblable qui s'est produit à Aznalcollar, en Espagne, en 1998, où l'environnement du parc national de Coto Doñana à a été pollué, également à la suite d'une rupture de digue, ont jeté un doute sur l'efficacité des politiques communautaires destinées à empêcher de telles catastrophes, et ont mis en lumière la nécessité de disposer d'une politique environnementale plus focalisée dans ce secteur.
