Perhaps I am concerned because I am a journalist. I like texts and I take words seriously, which is the essence of Europe – its humanism, taking texts seriously and taking language seriously.
Peut-être suis-je inquiet parce que je suis journaliste, j’aime les textes et je prends les mots au sérieux, ce qui constitue l’essence de l’Europe, de son humanisme, prendre les textes et la langue au sérieux.

Therefore, why can we not be brave enough to take the common-sense step and at the same time as supporting multilingualism start laying down the foundations for deciding which second language will be the common language for Europe? Yes, let us face the facts, let us be practical and honest and let us say that this second language has to be English.

I would like to put on record my disappointment at Mr Allister's comment on Mrs de Brún speaking a language 'no one cares to understand'. It may well not be the time or place to speak in Irish, but I do not think that derogatory and disparaging remarks about anyone's language, albeit a minority language, have any place in this House and I take exception to them.
Je voudrais faire part de ma déception quant aux commentaires de M. Allister sur la langue utilisée par Mme de Brún, une langue que, d’après lui, «personne ne prend la peine de comprendre».
