At EU level the 7th research framework programme will aim strongly boost our industries’ competitiveness in key technology areas by pooling and strengthening efforts across the EU and by leveraging private sector investment.

This Communication is based on an assessment of the activities undertaken and the developments which have occurred in different areas, in the process "revisiting" the various dimensions of the initiative. The Communication seeks to identify what should be done to give new momentum to the European Research Area initiative by strengthening efforts where necessary and defining new perspectives which will provide the initiative with more effective means of implementation.
Sur la base d'un bilan des actions engagées et des développements intervenus sur les différents plans, "revisitant" le projet dans ses dimensions variées, cette Communication s'emploie à identifier les actions à entreprendre pour lui donner un nouvel élan, en renforçant les efforts là où nécessaire, et en définissant de nouvelles perspectives à même de donner à l'entreprise des moyens de mise en oeuvre plus puissants.

Coordination is also needed with the Joint Programming Initiative "Urban Europe", which will pool national research efforts to transform urban areas to centres of innovation and technology, realise eco-friendly and intelligent intra-interurban transport logistic systems, reduce the ecological footprint and enhance climate neutrality.
La coordination s'impose également par rapport à l'initiative de programmation conjointe "Urban Europe" (L'Europe urbaine), qui réunira les efforts nationaux de recherche afin de transformer les zones urbaines en centres d'innovation et de technologie, mettre en place des systèmes logistiques de transport intra-urbain et interurbain intelligents et respectueux de l'environnement, réduire l'empreinte écologique et améliorer la neutralité climatique.

While the main responsibility in this area falls within the competence of Member States, achieving the EU poverty rate target will require a pooling of all efforts and instruments at EU and at national level.

The activities carried out in this area are intended to strengthen the scientific and technological capacities needed for Europe to be able to implement sustainable development, emphasised by the Göteborg European Council, and integrating its environmental, economic and social objectives with particular regard to renewable energy, transport, and sustainable management of Europe's land and marine resources.
L'objectif des actions menées dans ce domaine est de renforcer les capacités scientifiques et technologiques nécessaires à l'Europe pour mettre en oeuvre un développement durable, souligné par le Conseil européen de Göteborg, intégrant les objectifs environnementaux, économiques et sociaux, eu égard, en particulier, aux énergies renouvelables, aux transports et à la gestion durable des ressources terrestres et marines de l'Europe.

The activities carried out in this area are intended to strengthen the scientific and technological capacities needed for Europe to be able to implement sustainable development and make a significant contribution to the international efforts to understand and control global change and preserve the equilibrium of ecosystems.
