My concern with any compensation package made available to the aviation industry is to ensure that compensation is directed at the different sectors of the aviation industry – not just the airlines – and that the compensation measures are of an EU-wide nature.

I should like to thank Mrs Sander-ten Holte once again for her marvellous work and support for the swift introduction of the Montreal Convention into Community law, and she is quite right, since this new incorporation will mean passing on from the international system agreed 72 years ago – which in the end was trying to restrict the airlines’ liability – to another, more modern system which is aiming to do just the opposite: to give a high level of cover to the protection of passengers’ rights.
Je tiens à féliciter une fois encore Mme Sanders-Ten Holte pour son magnifique travail et le soutien qu'elle apporte à une introduction rapide de la convention de Montréal dans la réglementation communautaire. Elle a tout à fait raison de le faire, car cette transposition supposera le passage du régime international, convenu il y a 72 ans - et dont l'objectif était, en dernier ressort, de restreindre la responsabilité des compagnies aériennes -, à un système moderne dont l'objectif est précisément l'inverse : fournir un niveau élevé de couverture à la protection des droits des passagers.
