Even in the context of Regulation No 44/2001, the Court has held that Article 34(2) of that regulation, which concerns judgments issued in default of appearance, ‘does not mean that the defendant is required to take additional steps going beyond normal diligence in the defence of his rights, such as steps to inform himself of the contents of a judgment delivered in another Member State’.
