In 2008-2009, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada provided approximately $56 million to Canada Post to reduce the cost of shipping nutritious perishable food and other essential items by air to isolated northern communities under the Food Mail Program.

Welcomes the recent positive developments and the genuine climate of confidence between the newly elected President of the Republic of Cyprus, Dimitris Christofias, and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mehmet Talat; calls on the Commission to make every effort to keep the momentum going by exploiting the current window of opportunity with a view to achieving a comprehensive settlement within the UN framework, based on a bi-communal and bi-zonal federal state and on the principles on which the EU is founded; deplores once again the lack of progress towards ending the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community in the northern part of Cyprus, in spite of the promises made by the Council and the Commission in spring 2004; urges, in this regard, the Commission to speed up the often complicated and cumbersome procedures and decentralise the decision-making process so as to make the financial aid immediately available, provide for quick approval of projects and make every effort to improve the Green Line regulation, thus facilitating trade between the two parts of the island, which is at present hampered and restricted;

I too am in favour of ending the isolation of the Turkish-occupied northern community, but, before this happens, surely the handing over of EU aid money – and I call upon Mr Talat in particular – is inappropriate for as long as they are offering sanctuary to wanted fugitives from justice, particularly from the United Kingdom.
Je suis moi aussi favorable à la fin de l’isolement de la communauté du Nord occupée par les Turcs. Pourtant, avant d’en arriver là, le versement de fonds d’assistance européens - j’en appelle à M.
