It was also an opportunity to take stock of the progress achieved in EU-Lebanese co-operation and to discuss its future outlook as Lebanon and the EU are expected to enter into a new phase of intense co-operation with the entry into force of the Association Agreement.

The Agreement is not the first contractual arrangement between the EEC and Lebanon : a non-preferential agreement was signed in 1965 and came into force in 1968; another agreement, this time of a preferential nature, was negotiated and signed in 1972, but never in fact came into force since it lacked the necessary ratifications.
Cet accord n'est pas le premier arrangement contractuel conclu entre la Communaute et le Liban : un accord non preferentiel fut signe en 1965 et entra en vigueur en 1968; un autre accord, preferentiel cette fois, fut negocie et signe en 1972, mais il entra en fait jamais en vigueur, faute d'avoir obtenu les ratifications necessaires.
