Mr. Speaker, in today's paper, I read once again about the efforts of an international animal rights activist group, the IFAW, to spread misinformation about the Canadian seal hunt.

Stresses the wide range of the subjects raised in the petitions filed by citizens, such as fundamental rights, human rights, the rights of persons with disabilities, the internal market, environmental law, labour relations, migration policies, trade agreements, public health issues, child welfare, transport, animal rights and discrimination; calls on the Committee on Petitions to specialise its work further by nominating internal rapporteurs on the major policies to which petitioners refer; requests that, in order for the Committee to be able to deal with all this intensive and extensive range of petitions, more resources be allocated to its Secretariat;

What we do not know is the intentions of organizations like the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which is a very aggressive international for profit animal rights organization that makes a great deal of money by promoting animal rights causes.

Expects the FTA to include a binding and enforceable sustainable development chapter reflecting the EU’s and Vietnam’s common commitment to promote respect for, compliance with, and enforcement of international human rights agreements, the eight core ILO conventions, and key MEAs such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), with measures in the event of infringement providing for the involvement of independent civil society organisations representing economic, social, and environmental stakeholders in the monitoring of FTA negotiations and the implementation and monitoring of the sustainable development chapter, as well as encouraging enterprises to take up CSR practices, taking account of internationally agreed principles and instruments such as those of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the UN guiding principles on business and human rights, as well as the UN Principles for Responsible Investment and Reporting, and also to address outstanding issues such as the welfare of both farm and wild animals;

Observes the variety of thematic key areas concerned in the citizens’ petitions, such as fundamental rights, internal market, environmental law, public health issues, child welfare, transport and constructions, Spanish Coastal Law, new Regulation on good administration, persons with disabilities, age discrimination, public access to documents, European Schools, Fiscal Union, and the Steel Industry, animal rights and many more;
