Aerothermal, geothermal and hydrothermal heat energy captured by heat pumps shall be taken into account for the purposes of paragraph 1(b) provided that the final energy output significantly exceeds the primary energy input required to drive the heat pumps.

The amount of aerothermal, geothermal or hydrothermal energy captured by heat pumps to be considered energy from renewable sources for the purposes of this Directive, ERES, shall be calculated in accordance with the following formula:
La quantité d’énergie aérothermique, géothermique ou hydrothermique capturée par des pompes à chaleur, devant être considérée comme énergie produite à partir de sources renouvelables aux fins de la présente directive, ERES, se calcule selon la formule suivante:

‘hydrothermal energy’ means energy stored in the form of heat in surface water.

‘energy from renewable sources’ means energy from renewable non-fossil sources, namely wind, solar, aerothermal, geothermal, hydrothermal and ocean energy, hydropower, biomass, landfill gas, sewage treatment plant gas and biogases.
