As to the specific incident referred to by the MEP the Council will recall that it is for the Commission to ensure that Member States implement Community legislation such as Council Decision 87/600/Euratom on Community arrangements for the early exchange of information in the event of a radiological emergency, Council Directive 89/618/Euratom on informing the general public about health protection measures to be applied and steps to be taken in the event of a radiological emergency, and of course Council Directive 96/29/Euratom laying down basic safety standards for the protection of the health of workers and the general public against the dangers arising from ionizing radiations.
