The story run by some German media that the European Commission would propose to weaken the deficit criteria of the Stability and Growth Pact is purely invented.

It clearly explains that the Stability and Growth Pact criteria do need to be applied, but that if they are applied solely to expenditure, through cuts in expenditure, this will almost certainly lead to a recession.

- (PT) Monsieur le Président, en demandant ce débat, nous voulions affirmer qu’il est temps de suspendre le pacte de stabilité afin de revoir ses critères de convergence nominale, critères irrationnels et incongrus car ils ne tiennent compte ni des problèmes et difficultés des États membres, ni des différents niveaux de développement qui contribuent à aggraver les problèmes économiques, à entraver la croissance et l’application des stratégies communautaires pour l’emploi et pour la lutte contre la pauvreté, comme cela est apparu clairement lors de la première table ronde sur l’exclusion sociale organisée par la présidence et la Commission la semaine dernière, à Aarhus, au Danemark, à laquelle j’ai participé en tant que rapporteur du Parlement européen.
