After the collapse of ENRON, in January 2002, the US Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs launched a broad investigation seeking to elicit information on why the credit rating agencies continued to rate Enron a good credit risk (in fact of investment grade) until four days before the firm declared bankruptcy and to determine how future Enron-type calamities could be avoided.
