On 25 October 2011 the Commission adopted a legislative proposal requiring the disclosure of payments to governments (e.g. corporate income taxes, royalties, fees, production entitlements, bonuses and other material benefits) on a country and project basis by listed and large unlisted companies with activities in the extractive (oil, gas and mining) and logging of primary forest sectors.

Considers that curbing deforestation is a highly cost-effective way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and has the potential to offer significant reductions fairly quickly; calls on the Commission to accelerate the process of agreeing the EU's Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade partnership agreements and spread the system to other consumer countries; considers that, in the long run, this scheme should evolve into a global system to promote trade in sustainable timber; considers that the Commission should encourage companies to take action to control their own supply chains for timber and timber products, including introducing a requirement to include, in their annual reports, information on the legality and sustainability of the products consumed;

[20] The Campaign will support promotional activities by the main stakeholders, such as national governments, regions, municipalities, energy agencies, energy production but also energy service companies, utilities, industrial manufacturers, building developers, agricultural and forest industry, consumers’, industry, and farming associations, financial institutions, domestic and foreign trade associations, NGOs and development cooperation institutions.

There is an urgent need for us to begin using the instruments available to the Union to assist the affected regions and support the individuals and companies concerned. The need for our support is all the more pressing given that transportation, storage and forest exploitation cannot be delayed without serious consequences in terms of both the quality of the products and the restoration and protection of forest ecosystems.

Mr. Kenneth Higginbotham: If I could add an example of why I think it is a good idea, there is currently an effort going on between a number of forest industry companies in B.C., represented by the Council of Forest Industries, the IWA, and the Government of British Columbia, looking at the possibility of going into various marketplaces to sell B.C. forest products and to try to sell new B.C. forest products.
