– (DA) Mr President, Commissioner, President-in-Office of the Council, on behalf of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe I would also like to highlight the excellent negotiation result that we can celebrate in connection with the adoption of the 2008 budget on Thursday.
– (DA) Monsieur le Président, Madame la Commissaire, Monsieur le Président en exercice du Conseil, au nom du groupe de l'Alliance des démocrates et des libéraux pour l'Europe, je tiens aussi à souligner l'excellent résultat des négociations, qui ont mené à l'adoption, jeudi, du budget pour 2008.

Emanuel Jardim Fernandes (PSE ) (PT) Madam President, Mrs de Oedenberg’s report is not only excellent, resulting from her complete openness and ability to negotiate consensuses, but also highlights the strong regional disparities that exist throughout Europe, both in the new Member States and in the old ones, where a large part of the regions found themselves excluded from the group of poorest regions purely on the grounds of statistics that are not always complete or adequately compared and that, therefore, need to be improved.
Emanuel Jardim Fernandes (PSE ). - (PT) Madame la Présidente, le rapport de Mme de Oedenberg est non seulement excellent, grâce à la grande ouverture de cette dernière et à sa capacité à négocier des consensus, mais il met également en évidence les fortes disparités régionales qui existent dans toute l’Europe, tant dans les nouveaux États membres que dans les anciens, où une grande partie des régions se trouvent exclues du groupe des régions les plus pauvres, pour la simple raison que leurs statistiques ne sont pas toujours complètes ou correctement comparées et qu’elles doivent, de ce fait, être améliorées.

It is clear, however, that we cannot ignore the importance of free trade, which is something that the Central American and Andean countries are asking for, and in that regard, my only recommendation, Mr President, is that this ambitious timetable that the Commissioner has told us about, given that the Commission has approved the negotiation guidelines and Parliament is going to approve them tomorrow as well, can be given substance as soon as possible, because we have already waited too long for the Andean and Central American Communities to have association agreements, like those with Mexico and Chile, which have produced excellent results, by the way.

En effet, nous avons déjà attendu trop longtemps que les Communautés andines et d’Amérique centrale disposent d’accords d’association semblables à ceux du Mexique et du Chili, lesquels ont produit d’excellents résultats.

I was commissioned to draft an own-initiative report for Parliament, and I am extremely pleased to note the excellent negotiations that we have had, with good results, and the fact that we have been able to achieve a broad consensus in the Committee, receiving also the support of the Council and the Commission.
