Manufacturing industry accounts for 30% of the Community GNP and provides employment for around 41 million people, or 75% of the work force. It is therefore vital to the Community economy. However, it is experiencing structural difficulties in satisfying a growing demand in the face of ever keener competition. The aim of this Community programme is to improve competitiveneness by encouraging cross-frontier cooperation between different sectors of industry and between companies, research centres and universities in research focussing on industrial applications at the precompetitive stage. 1 COM(88) 385.
Une telle collaboration est appelée à contribuer significativement à l'édification du grand marché à l'horizon 1992 sous plusieurs aspects : harmonisation des pratiques de fabrication, développement de standards techniques communs, réduction des barrières techniques au commerce, promotion de la compétitivité de l'industrie européenne, maximisation de l'effort de recherche dans la Communauté par la combinaison des ressources et des compétences présentes dans les différents Etats membres, etc. L'industrie manufacturière représente quelque 30 % du PNB communautaire et emploie environ 41 millions de personnes ce qui représente 75 % de la force de travail industrielle.
