On 1 June 2005 the Commission adopted the initiative “i2010[1]: European Information Society 2010 for growth and employment” as a comprehensive strategy for modernising and deploying all EU policy instruments to encourage the development of the digital economy. i2010 consists of three pillars: a Single European Information Space, Innovation and Investment, and an Inclusive European Information Society.

If I go back and look at some of the data that I'm aware of with respect to the EU and with respect to some of the structural changes that are occurring, and if I look at what the EU sees as its most innovative sectors and what it calls the European knowledge society, I see that these include life sciences and biotechnology, information society, energy and the environment, and sustainable growth.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) hosted an initial information meeting and dialogue with European civil society organisations and networks in Brussels on 18 April. This meeting was held at the request of the European Convention and was attended by its vice-chairman Jean-Luc Dehaene.

WORKER INFORMATION AND CONSULTATION The Council held a discussion on the Commission communication on worker information and consultation and on the following points in particular: - the advisability of making the "European company", the "European association", the "European co-operative society" and the "European mutual society" subject to Community rules on worker information and consultation at national level in addition to the existing Directive on European Works Councils; - the desirability of rules for worker participation in the organs of those entities; - the desirability of a mandatory link between the regulations concerning the four entities and the relevant rules on worker information, consultation and, where appropriate, participation; - the advisability of setting up a high-level study group to provide a more thorough knowledge of national systems and draw up recommendations for future action.
INFORMATION ET CONSULTATION DES TRAVAILLEURS Le Conseil a procédé à un débat sur la communication de la Commission en matière d'information et de consultation des travailleurs, et notamment sur les thèmes suivants : - l'opportunité de soumettre la "société européenne", l'"association européenne", la "société coopérative européenne" et la "mutualité européenne" à des règles communautaires en matière d'information et de consultation au niveau national, en complément de la directive existante sur les comités d'entreprise européens ; - l'opportunité de règles en matière de participation des travailleurs au sein des organes desdites entités ; - l'opportunité d'un lien obligatoire entre les règlements concernant les quatre entités et des règles pertinentes en matière d'information, de consultation et, le cas échéant, de participation ; - l'opportunité de mettre en place un groupe de réflexion à haut niveau en vue d'approfondir la connaissance de systèmes nationaux et d'élaborer des recommandations pour l'action future.
