Such collaboration will be a major contributory factor in the establishment of a single market (e.g. harmonisation of manufacturing practices; development of joint technical standards, thus avoiding technical barriers to trade; enhancement of the competitiveness of European industry in its home market; maximising the research potential of the Community by combining complementary skills found in different Member States. Manufacturing industry accounts for 30% of the Community GNP and provides employment for around 41 million people, or 75% of the work force. It is therefore vital to the Community economy. However, it is experiencing structural difficulties in satisfying a growing demand in the face of ever keener competition. The aim of this Community programme is to improve competitiveneness by encouraging cross-frontier cooperation between different sectors of industry and between companies, research centres and universities in research focussing on industrial applications at the precompetitive stage. 1 COM(88) 385.
