It would allow the European freight carriers to establish international freight lanes in the Asia-Pacific region and thereby to increase the efficiency of their operations thereby enabling the provision of services according to the needs of their global customers and no longer being constrained by the need to combine rights under various bilateral agreements.

With more than 700 million passengers per year, increasing number of air carriers and expanding passenger/freight capacity, European air transport has been set on a consistent upward trend of a dynamic development growing on average at 5% annually with air traffic predicted to almost double by 2020.

– (PT) I congratulate Mr Pohjamo on the excellent report he has drafted on the Parliament and Council proposal for a regulation on the carriage of passengers, freight and mail by air, which I support, especially with regard to the need to adopt regulations that will enable mechanisms to be set up to provide European carriers with up-to-date and comparable statistics for this sector. These will help to guarantee the safety of passengers and the efficient management of these companies.
