It is extremely concerning that the current President of the ESC, Göke Frerichs, has sent a letter to members of the Committee on Budgetary control claiming that "the application of the concept of 'value for money' to a body established by the European Treaties is highly questionable and politically unjustifiable" when this is precisely the work of the Committee on Budgetary Control.

Göke Frerichs, aux membres de la commission du contrôle budgétaire, dans laquelle celui-ci avance que l'application du concept de rapport avantage-coût à une institution établie par les traités européens est très discutable et politiquement injustifiable, est extrêmement inquiétante dans la mesure où cela est précisément le rôle dévolu à la commission du contrôle budgétaire.

Speaking at the first meeting of the European ESC's subcommittee on the European Convention, Committee president Göke Frerichs made particular reference to the need for the European ESC to listen to and collate the views not only of civil society organisations in the current 15 Member States but also those of the candidate countries a role that was entirely logical in view of the Nice Treaty's explicit link between the European ESC and organised civil society.

Il a notamment fait référence à la nécessité pour le CES européen d'écouter et de reprendre les points de vue des organisations de la société civile des 15 Etats membres actuels, mais aussi ceux des pays candidats ce qui est entièrement logique, à la lumière du lien explicite que tisse le Traité de Nice entre le CES européen et la société civile organisée.

N.B.: In the aftermath of Tuesday's attacks on New York and other American cities, the European Economic and Social Committee has decided to issue a single press release on the activity of the ESC during its September plenary session (Mr Romano Prodi, president of the European Commission, was due to attend the plenary session on its opening day to present the White Paper on European governance and - with ESC president Mr Göke Frerichs - to sign a protocol of cooperation between the two institutions. Following the tragic events in the United States the previous day, he was unable to attend. These items were thus postponed to a later date (the ESC press office will supply more information on the new schedule as soon as possible.)
N.B. : Suite aux attaques de mardi sur New York et d'autres villes américaines, le Comité économique et social européen a décidé de publier un communiqué de presse unique sur les activités du CES lors de sa session plénière de septembre (M. Romano Prodi, président de la Commission européenne, devait participer à la première journée de la session plénière pour y présenter le Livre blanc sur la gouvernance européenne et - avec le Président du CES, M. The President of the European Economic and Social Committee (ESC), Mr Göke Frerichs, welcomed the fact that the Nice Treaty recognises the ESC's role as the representative of the EU's civil society organisations.

The president of the European Economic and Social Committee, Mr Göke Frerichs, was in Warsaw on 7-8 December to support the move to set up an economic and social council (ESC) in Poland.
