Up to now the agreed principles governing ERDF aid for assets to be privatised have been the following: - the aid must result in an investment to the benefit of the users of the infrastructure, rather than future shareholders; - the aid should be pitched at a level reflecting the extent to which a subsidy is necessary to ensure the investment is undertaken; - the retention of infrastructure in public use during its economic life is normally required; - in the event of a resale of the assets during their economic life, repayment of all or part of the ERDF grant may be required.
