Products are now clearly within the scope of the EMAS Regulation in the same way as activities and services, i.e. their significant environmental impacts have to be included in the environmental review, management and audit system; their impacts have also to be verified by an EMAS verifier, information about them has to be included in the environmental statement and their environmental performance has to be continuously improved.

The SRD primarily addresses organisations that are already EMAS-registered, secondly organisations that consider registering with EMAS in the future, and thirdly also those which have implemented another environmental management system or those without a formal environmental management system wishing to learn more about best environmental management practices in order to improve their environmental performance.

The operational scheme of EMAS and the general requirements for participation remain essentially the same as under the current Regulation: organisations can participate in EMAS on condition that they develop an environmental policy, carry out an environmental review, establish an environmental management system, carry out an internal environmental audit and develop an environmental statement.

The purpose of this document is to give guidance for the identification of significant environmental aspects arising from activities, products and services over which an organisation applying EMAS has management control or influence according to Annex VI. Under EMAS, significant environmental aspects are at the centre of attention of an organisation's environmental management system and of the evaluation and improvement of its environmental performance by setting objectives and targets as well as of the ongoing review process.
