A new initiative - i2010: European Information Society will stimulate the take-up of ICTs, to continue the eEurope agenda which the Lisbon Strategy fostered. It will do this by promoting a clear, stable and competitive environment for electronic communications and digital services; increased research and innovation in ICTs and an Information Society dedicated to inclusion and quality of life.

The evaluators found that the eEurope 2005 Action Plan was an important factor helping to keep ICT on the political agenda at a time where interest in the subject was waning. eGovernment and eHealth are two examples where, thanks to eEurope, Member States are working towards precise goals underpinned by high-level support.

The actions taken under the programme on benchmarking, good practices and policy coordination shall work to achieve the objectives of the Commission Communication of 2 February 2005 to the Spring European Council, entitled “Working together for growth and jobs – A new start for the Lisbon Strategy”, aiming at stimulating the take-up of ICTs as a continuation of the eEurope agenda and in particular promoting broadband, eGovernment, eBusiness, eHealth and eLearning, and the objectives of the Commission Communication of 1 June 2005, entitled “i2010 – A European Information Society for growth and employment”, promoting an open and competitive digital economy.

(3) In its Resolution of 9 December 2004 on looking into the future of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) , the Council invited the Commission to start the preparatory work for the follow-up of the eEurope 2005 action plan as an important part of the new Agenda for the Information Society beyond 2005.
