The aim of this report is to set out the concrete future objectives of education systems for the next ten years, in accordance with the mandate given by the conclusions of the Lisbon European Council held on 23 and 24 March 2000. These jointly-agreed objectives, which will allow all Europeans to participate in the new knowledge society, will be met using the "open method of coordination".
Ce rapport vise à définir pour les dix années à venir, conformément au mandat donné par les conclusions du Conseil européen de Lisbonne des 23 et 24 mars 2000, les objectifs concrets futurs des systèmes d'éducation et de formation, qui permettront à tous les citoyens européens de participer à la nouvelle société de la connaissance. Ces objectifs définis en commun seront réalisés en utilisant la «méthode ouverte de coordination».

The report was presented to the Education Council held under the Portuguese Presidency (8 June 2000) and to the conference of European Education Ministers held in Bucharest (18-20 June 2000) where it met with a very favourable reception.

(8) The European Council held in Luxembourg on 20 and 21 November 1997 recognised that continuous education and vocational training can make a major contribution to the employment policies of the Member States with a view to improving suitability for employment, adaptability and the spirit of enterprise, and promoting equality of opportunities.
