11. Commends the demining activities of the Sri Lankan army and international NGOs such as the Halo Trust, and recognises the considerable funding provided by the EU and the additional funding announced by the UK; urges the Sri Lankan Government and armed forces, along with the EU and its Member States, to continue to provide the necessary resources for the further clearance of land mines, which are a serious obstacle to rehabilitation and economic regeneration; calls once more for Sri Lanka to accede to the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty;

Urges the Sri Lankan Government to give further and increased attention to the clearance of landmines, the presence of which presents a serious obstacle to rehabilitation and economic regeneration, calling on it, in this regard, to take the very positive step of acceding to the Ottawa Treaty (Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction), and urges the Commission, in particular, to sponsor additional support for urgent mine-clearance work in Sri Lanka;

With regard to the Community initiatives, it should be noted that to the three initially retained initiatives, namely INTERREG (cross-border, transnational and inter-regional cooperation), EQUAL (transnational cooperation to combat all forms of discrimination and inequalities in the labour market) and LEADER (rural development), a fourth was added called URBAN (economic and social regeneration of cities and urban neighbourhoods).
Pour ce qui concerne les initiatives communautaires, il est à noter qu'une quatrième initiative dénommée URBAN (rénovation économique et sociale des villes et des quartiers urbains en crise) est venue s'ajouter aux trois retenues initialement, à savoir INTERREG (coopération transfrontalière, transnationale et interrégionale), EQUAL (coopération transnationale visant à lutter contre les discriminations et inégalités de toute nature en relation avec le marché du travail) et LEADER (développement rural).
