In its advisory opinion of September 25, 1982, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights has held that in view of the reference to the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, article 75 of the American Convention “must be deemed to permit States to ratify or adhere to the Convention with whatever reservations they wish to make, provided only that such reservations are not incompatible with the object and purpose of the Convention”.
