Does the Council recall the supplementary question asked by Mr David Martins (PSE) following Oral Question H‑0577/04 asked by the GUE/NGL Group at the European Parliament sitting of 23 February 2005, in which Mr Martins pointed out that Mr Vanunu had been taken from European soil illegally in 1986 and in which he asked if the Council would encourage the Israeli Government to stop their persecution of this individual, allow him to leave Israel and, if he so desired, to live in the European Union, to which Minister Schmit, on behalf of the Luxembourg Presidency replied, ‘yes, I will’?

Le Conseil se rappelle-t-il la question supplémentaire du député David Martin (PSE) à la question H‑0577/04 du groupe GUE/NGL lors de la réunion du Parlement européen du 23 février 2005, dans laquelle il faisait notamment valoir que M. Vanunu avait été arrêté illégalement sur le territoire européen en 1986 et demandait d'insister auprès du gouvernement israélien pour qu'il renonce à le poursuivre, l'autorise à quitter Israël et, s'il le souhaite, à résider dans l'Union européenne, ainsi que la réponse de M. Schmit, à l'époque ministre compétent dans le cadre de la présidence luxembourgeoise: «Je le ferai»?

I would encourage the Council, the Commission and the Arab League to make the effort to press ahead, and would very much like to see them achieve success as soon as possible.

The Commission would encourage the European Parliament to vote favourably on the Council compromise text so as to avoid any delay that would otherwise arise and would only serve the purpose of those trying to profit from illegal practices.
