Mr. Speaker, last Friday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and I met with some 30 leaders of Canada's Coptic community to express Canada's solidarity with that community, particularly their loved ones in Egypt, to express once more this government's condemnation of the violence, particularly that by, apparently, members of the Egyptian military two weeks ago, killing innocent Coptic civilians.
Monsieur le Président, le ministre des Affaires étrangères et moi-même avons rencontré vendredi dernier une trentaine de dirigeants de la communauté copte du Canada pour leur témoigner la solidarité de notre pays à leur égard, et plus particulièrement à l'égard de leurs proches en Égypte, et pour leur répéter que le gouvernement condamne les actes de violence, et surtout ceux qui auraient été commis par des membres des forces militaires égyptiennes il y a deux semaines, où d'innocents civils coptes ont perdu la vie.

On October 21, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism and I met with more than 30 leaders of the Coptic community on Parliament Hill to discuss how our government could help protect Coptic Christians here and in Egypt.

On this particular issue and regardless of whether we strictly agree with your reading of the situation that the Coptic community is being subjected to specific measures, our information indicates that, even if the Coptic Christians are being affected the most by these repressive measures, this does not point to an attitude of particular retaliation against the Coptic community. There is an ongoing conflict between traders and certain local communities which has affected the Coptic community but which does not necessarily indicate a specific intention by the Egyptian authorities on this issue.
