In order to improve the coordination and consistency of scientific advice, therefore, the Commission has: * organized additional conferences (two on BSE and one major conference on hormones last year); * set up an ad hoc multidisciplinary committee; unfortunately, the opinions delivered by this committee so far have not lived up to our expectations. Specifically on the question of genetically modified maize, the three scientific committees concerned have also adopted a promising new approach involving all three holding a joint hearing of external experts. Our present scientific committees bring together individual specialists with a wide spectrum of knowledge and are quite up to the task of providing sound recommendations. However, we also need to examine whether our model is capable of meeting the ever-changing demands of today, and whether and how we can improve on it. Indeed, this is something we should be doing at regular intervals. Let me list a few of the issues raised: - Are our committees independent enough of the interests of Member States and of lobbyists?
