The European Commission has found public support by the Land of Rhineland-Palatinate to Frankfurt-Hahn airport in Germany to be in line with EU state aid rules.
La Commission européenne a estimé que l'aide publique accordée par le Land de Rhénanie-Palatinat à l'aéroport de Francfort-Hahn, en Allemagne, était conforme aux règles de l'UE en matière d'aides d'État.

In its assessment, the Commission found that public funding to Frankfurt-Hahn airport will cover the operating losses whilst HNA Group makes the necessary private investment to enable the airport's return to viability, which is due in 2023.

The European Commission took seven decisions under EU state aid rules on 1 October 2014 with regard to public aid measures to airports and airlines. The decisions concern three airports in Germany (Frankfurt Hahn, Saarbrücken and Zweibrücken), an airport in Belgium (Charleroi), an airport in Italy (Alghero) and an airport in Sweden (Västerås).

The Commission will particularly investigate in-depth whether following measures where granted under market conditions: a credit line provided to Frankfurt Hahn airport by the cash pooling facility of the Land Rheinland-Pfalz; the re-financing of loans granted to the airport by the publicly owned Investitions- und Strukturbank and; an underlying guarantee provided by the Land.

The public support is being awarded under the French RD aid scheme for the aeronautics sector which the Commission approved in 1996 (see IP/96/665).
