The BRITE/EURAM programme(1) was launched earlier this year as part of the Community's continuing efforts to strengthen the technology base of its manufacturing industries (e.g. automobiles, machine tools, construction, clothing industry). The European Commission has just approved 163 new research projects for Community funding under this programme, together with 60 special "feasibility awards" aimed at helping SMEs participate in industrial research. RESEARCH PROJECTS The 163 research projets were selected from 645 proposals covering a wide range of industrial manufacturing technologies and advanced materials applications. Most of them are industrial applied research, being relatively large, industrially-led collaborative projects involving at least twon independent companies in different Member States. Eleven are research projects of a more fundamental character, mostly in materials science and largely carried out in universities. The total number of participating organisations in the selected projects is 1021 of which 56% are industrial, 21% are research institutes and 23% are universities. Twenty percent of the participants are MSEs (less than 500 employees), representing 36% of the industrial partners (A total of 645 proposals was received, involving 3347 partners and costing more than 1400 million ECU). The projects chosen will receive Community funding up to a total of 188 million ECU.
Le programme BRITE/EURAM(1), instrument de l'action entreprise par la Communauté pour renforcer la base technologique de l'industrie manufacturière européenne (automobiles, machines-outils, construction, vêtement a été lancé au début de cette année. Dans le cadre de ce programme, la Commission vient d'approuver 163 nouveaux projets de recherche en même temps que 60 "primes de faisabilité" destinées à aider les PME dans leur effort de recherche industrielle. PROJET DE RECHERCHE Les 163 projets de recherche ont été sélectionnés à partir de 645 propositions couvrant une large gamme de technologies appliquées dans l'industrie manufacturière et le secteur des matériaux avancés. La plupart d'entre eux sont des projets de recherche appliquée, dans un sens large de ce mot, impliquant la coopération d'au moins deux entreprises de deux pays membres différents. Onze projets, la plupart dans le domaine des matériaux, consistent en recherches de caractère plus fondamental et sont essentiellement exécutés par des universités. Le nombre total d'organisations impliquées dans les projets sélectionnés est de 1021, dont 56% sont des industries, 21% des instituts de recherche et 23% des universités. The Commission believes that the proposals chosen as a result of this severe selection represent a strong and wide-ranging European research effort which will provide a sound basis for key future technological developments in the areas addressed.
