On 17 March 1986, at a meeting of Commission representatives and the manufacturers, national authorities and parties responsible for European broadcasting, a broad consensus was reached in favour of submitting to the CCIR a work programme laying down the rough outlines of a European world standard for hig-definition television. In practice, the Europeans will be proposing to the CCIR that swift action be taken to launch a series of laboratory experiments lasting for a least two years and backed by R?D activities, with a view to the new equipment being placed on the market by the beginning of the next decade. It should be noted, in this connection, that the promoters of the Japanese project have announced that the launch date for the marketing of the first high-definition television equipment will be 1989. - 2 - At the meeting held on 17 March the Commission informed the participants that the RACE programme (new European strategy in the field of telecommunications) would actively contribute to the projects being undertaken in this sector.
Le 17 mars 1986, a l'occasion d'une reunion groupant autour des representants de la Commission europeenne, les industriels, les Administrations nationales et les responsables de la radiodiffusion europeenne, un large consensus s'est degageen faveur d'un programme de travail qui sera soumis au CCIR qui doit constituer l'ebauche d'une norme mondiale d'origine europeenne en matiere de television de haute definition.En pratique les Europeens proposeront au CCIR d'entamer rapidement, pour une periode de deux ans au moins, une serie d'experiences en laboratoire appuyees par un effort de recherche et de developpement pouvant aboutir a la mise sur le marche de nouveaux equipements a partir de la fin des annees 1980.Il faut savoir en effet que les promoteurs du projet japonais ont annonce la mise sur le marche des premiers equipements de television de haute definition a partir de 1989. - 2 - Au cours de la reunion du 17 mars, la Commission a informe les participants que le programme RACE (la nouvelle strategie europeenne en matiere de telecommunications) fourniraitune contribution active aux projets du secteur.
