We are already waiting for Supreme Court decisions to find out if sentences of more than 25 years—such as three consecutive sentences of 25 years, where the person is sentenced to 75 years in prison—are legal in our Canadian system under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I refer my colleagues to the report of the Canadian Sentencing Commission, ``Sentencing Reform in Canada: The Canadian Approach'', chapter eight, in which the commission opposed mandatory minimum sentences on the grounds that they diminish the role of the judge and can therefore result in arbitrary punishment and other inequities.
Je voudrais citer pour mes collègues le rapport de la Commission canadienne sur la détermination de la peine, intitulé «Réformer la sentence: Une approche canadienne», particulièrement le chapitre 8, dans lequel la Commission s'oppose aux peines minimales obligatoires parce que celles-ci diminuent le rôle du juge et peuvent donc entraîner des peines arbitraires et d'autres iniquités.
