On February 25 1992, the Commission opened an inquiry under the EC's Merger Regulation after the Nestle group formally notified its intention to buy Source Perrier SA. One month later, the Commission extended its inquiry for a further four months on the grounds that the acquisition raised serious doubts that it would create or strengthen a dominant position on the French bottled water market.
La Commission avait entamé son examen du rachat de Perrier sous le règlement communautaire des concentrations lors de la notification de ce rachat par Nestlé le 25 février 1992. Un mois plus tard la Commission entrait dans la deuxième phase d'examen de quatre mois étant donné que la dite concentration soulevait des doutes sérieux pour la concurrence sur le marché français de l'eau embouteillée.
