Protocol No 9 on Unit 1 and Unit 2 of the Bohunice V1 nuclear power plant in Slovakia, as annexed to the 2003 Act of Accession, reiterates Slovakia’s commitment to close the Bohunice V1 nuclear power plant and, to this end, establishes an assistance programme with a budget of EUR 90 million for the period 2004 to 2006.

The Community contribution to the programme under this Regulation shall be granted for the purpose of providing financial support for measures connected with the decommissioning of the Bohunice V1 nuclear power plant, measures for environmental upgrading in line with the acquis and for modernising conventional production capacity to replace the production capacity of the two reactors at the Bohunice V1 power plant and other measures which stem from the decision to close and decommission this plant and which contribute to the necessary restructuring, upgrading of the environment and modernisation of the energy production, transmission and distribution sectors in Slovakia as well as to enhancing security of supply and energy efficiency in Slovakia.
La contribution communautaire allouée au programme au titre du présent règlement est octroyée dans le but de soutenir financièrement des mesures liées au déclassement de la centrale nucléaire de Bohunice V1, des mesures en faveur de la réhabilitation de l’environnement dans le respect de l’acquis et de la modernisation des capacités conventionnelles de production destinées à remplacer les capacités de production des deux réacteurs de la centrale de Bohunice V1, et d’autres mesures qui découlent de la décision de fermer et de déclasser cette centrale et qui contribuent à la réalisation des impératifs de restructuration, de réhabilitation de l’environnement et de modernisation des secteurs de la production, de la transmission et de la distribution d’énergie en Slovaquie, ainsi qu’à l’amélioration de la sécurité de l’approvisionnement et de l’efficacité énergétique dans le pays.

Slovakia committed itself to the closure of Unit 1 and Unit 2 of the Bohunice V1 nuclear power plant by 31 December 2006 and 31 December 2008, respectively.

In Protocol No 9 the Union also recognised that decommissioning of the Bohunice V1 nuclear power plant will have to continue beyond the Financial Perspectives 2002 to 2006 and that this effort represents a significant financial burden for Slovakia.

(3) In the Protocol the European Union has also recognised that decommissioning of the Bohunice V1 nuclear power plant will have to continue beyond the current Financial Perspectives and that this effort represents a significant financial burden for Slovakia.
(3) L'Union européenne a également reconnu dans le protocole que le démantèlement de la centrale nucléaire de Bohunice V1 devra se poursuivre au-delà des perspectives financières actuelles et que cet effort représente pour la Slovaquie une charge financière significative.

(4a) The European Parliament, the Council and the Commission recognise the efforts made by Slovakia to increase the safety of the Bohunice V1 nuclear power plant before accession, and the fact that Slovakia invested approximately EUR 250 million in safety measures between 1993 and 2000, and will take this into consideration when making the decision on the level of financial assistance to be granted to Slovakia.
(4 bis) Le Parlement européen, le Conseil et la Commission reconnaissent les efforts déployés par la Slovaquie pour accroître la sécurité de la centrale nucléaire de Bohunice V1 avant l'adhésion et le fait que la Slovaquie a investi quelque 250 millions d'EUR dans des mesures de sécurité entre 1993 et 2000, et prendront cet élément en considération lorsqu'ils arrêteront une décision concernant le niveau de l'assistance financière octroyée à la Slovaquie.
