– (ES) Mr President, along the same lines as my fellow Member, Mr Bilbao, I would like to say to this House that a few days ago, the Spanish Government halted the process of recognising a new Basque political group on the Register of Political Parties.
– (ES) Monsieur le Président, dans la même démarche que mon collègue député M. Bilbao, je souhaite préciser à cette Assemblée qu’il y a quelques jours, le gouvernement espagnol a interrompu le processus de reconnaissance d’un nouveau groupement politique basque au Registre des partis politiques.

– (ES) Mr President, as a Basque political representative, I do not believe that I am mistaken in saying that, for the great majority of Basque citizens, of Euskadi or of Euskal Herria, today is a great day, an historic day, on which this Parliament, the institution representing all of the Europeans, is finally agreeing to turn its attention to a part of its internal territory which has been suffering a conflict for a very long time, a conflict which, because it has not been dealt with properly or quickly enough, has led a group of extremists to resort to violence over recent years, spreading death and pain.
- (ES) Monsieur le Président, en tant que représentant politique basque, je crois ne pas me tromper en disant que, pour la grande majorité des citoyens basques, d’Euskadi ou de Euskal Herria, aujourd’hui est un grand jour, un jour historique. Notre Parlement, l’institution qui représente tous les Européens, décide enfin de prêter attention à une partie de son territoire intérieur qui souffre d’un conflit depuis très longtemps, un conflit qui, parce qu’il n’a pas été traité comme il se doit ou assez vite, a conduit un groupe d’extrémistes à recourir à la violence ces dernières années, en répandant la mort et la douleur.

I am returning to the Basque Country, where we are experiencing some historic events: after 30 years of a Basque nationalist government, we are going to have a socialist president of the Basque Country, Patxi López, and I would like to represent my political group tomorrow when he takes office.

The applicant also claims, secondly, that the dispute is part of a campaign to criminalise the political activity of Basque activists seeking independence and especially the EH/B, a campaign that began in 2002 following a press conference given by spokesmen of the Spanish parliamentary groups and political parties, which pressed the institution to open an enquiry.

I am sure there are members opposite who feel as badly about supporting some of the parties on this side of the House as some of the people who support us would feel about supporting government members on the other side.
