Dear colleagues, I would like to thank you all for your attention and solidarity, which the nations of the Baltic countries have been looking forward to for so many years.

The EESC would like to emphasise that while Adriatic and Ionian regional cooperation is fundamental to assisting the countries of the Western Balkans in the pre-accession process, and strengthening links with the Danube and Baltic macro-regions, it is also essential to consider the Adriatic and Ionian area as a functional area of the Mediterranean basin.
Le Comité souhaite souligner que, si la coopération dans la région adriatico-ionienne est fondamentale lorsqu'il s'agit d'aider les pays des Balkans occidentaux dans le cadre du processus de préadhésion et de renforcer les liens avec les macrorégions du Danube et de la mer Baltique, il est également essentiel de considérer l'espace adriatico-ionien comme une zone fonctionnelle du Bassin méditerranéen.

Therefore an integrated approach to maritime affairs would certainly mean that we look at all these problems and try to bring about more coordination between the different stakeholders, between the different Member States and also third countries like Russia, with regard to the Baltic, so that in that way we can achieve a better result with regard to the management of the different sectoral areas concerning the Baltic.
Une approche intégrée des affaires maritimes signifierait dès lors certainement que nous examinerions tous ces problèmes et tenterions d’aboutir à davantage de coordination entre les différentes parties concernées, entre les différents États membres, mais également avec les pays tiers comme la Russie, concernant la Baltique, afin d’arriver ainsi à un meilleur résultat en matière de gestion des différents domaines sectoriels relatifs à la Baltique.

I haven't heard you mention where countries like Portugal and Spain, the Baltic countries, or the Balkans are on this particular issue.

In this context, it would be positively humiliating if the European Union failed to get started on the reforms needed in order to be able to receive the central and eastern European countries, Malta and Cyprus; and those who continue to apply the brakes here are merely demonstrating that they are much less capable of reform than any of the candidate countries, especially little Latvia. They are simply not entitled to chide this Baltic country like a stupid schoolboy.

– (FI) Mr President, Commissioner, thank you for your reply, but I would like to say very briefly that, now, as the EU is enlarging to the east in accordance with a very tight timetable, and they have been transporting horses from the Baltic countries, among others, into the EU area on journeys of up to a hundred hours long, I think it is quite odd that at the same time we are calling on applicant countries to adhere very closely to the guidelines and legal provisions. In our own territory, however, we allow such violations that – as has been seen in public – are simply inhumane, considering we are supposed to be a civilised western Europe.

Je dirais simplement, en deux mots, que maintenant que l’Union européenne est sur le point de s’élargir vers l’est à très court terme et que, pour citer un exemple, on a transporté des chevaux des pays baltes vers l’Union européenne - la durée du transport a parfois été de près de cent heures -, je trouve que dans ces conditions il est assez étrange que nous exigions que les pays candidats respectent strictement les directives et les règles.
