The Mining Industry Human Resources Council, formerly the Mining Industry Training and Adjustment Council, just released a two-year study that indicated that we are going to be in need, even under modest growth scenarios, of between 57,000 and 81,000 new people over the next 10 years.

Welcomes the Council's conclusion recognising the environmental and social problems arising from the closure of the long established mercury mines in Almadén, Spain, as a consequence of the Community strategy concerning mercury; recommends that adequate compensation measures be undertaken and duly funded by the Commission in order to allow the area affected by the closure of mercury mines to achieve viable economic and social alternatives; underlines that consideration should be given to the possibility of using Almadén for the safe storage of the existing metallic mercury stocks or metallic mercury sub-produced by industry all over Europe but not mercury-containing articles that have become waste, thus making use of the infrastructures, local manpower and technological expertise existing there;
31. se félicite que le Conseil reconnaisse, dans ses conclusions, les problèmes environnementaux et sociaux entraînés par la fermeture des mines de mercure établies de longue date à Almadén (Espagne) au titre de la mise en œuvre de la stratégie communautaire sur le mercure; recommande que des mesures de compensation adéquates soient prises et dûment financées par la Commission afin de permettre à la région touchée par la fermeture des mines de mercure de trouver des solutions de remplacement viables du point de vue économique et social, et souligne qu'il convient d'examiner la possibilité d'employer le site d'Almadén pour entreposer, dans des conditions sûres, les stocks de mercure métallique existants ou le mercure métallique secondaire obtenu par l'industrie européenne, mais pas les produits contenant du mercure devenus des déchets, ce qui permettra, du même coup, d'utiliser les infrastructures, la main-d'œuvre et le savoir-faire technologique qui existent sur place;

60. Calls on the Council and the Commission to ensure, through the EU-China Energy and Environment Programme and other channels, that collaboration on renewable energy/energy efficiency issues will be a priority for future EU-China co-operation, and to encourage China's development of sustainable technologies and industries, particularly to enable cooperation in developing new technologies that will make a sustainable future possible; calls on China, when building new coal-fired power stations, to use the latest, most efficient and most environmentally-friendly technologies, and as soon as possible to use so-called clean coal technologies in the construction of such power stations; further calls on China to improve safety standards in its coal mines; calls on the Commission to offer the cooperation of European mining technology companies; calls on China, in the event of the possible building of new nuclear power stations, to make use of European experience and safety technology and to cooperate closely with European manufacturers and authorities such as the International Atomic Energy Agency;
60. invite le Conseil et la Commission à veiller, au travers du programme UE-Chine sur l'énergie et l'environnement et par d'autres moyens, à ce que la collaboration dans le domaine des sources d'énergie renouvelables/de l'efficacité énergétique soit une priorité de la future coopération UE-Chine et à encourager le développement de technologies et d'industries durables en Chine, notamment pour permettre à la Chine de coopérer au développement de nouvelles technologies qui rendront possible un avenir durable; invite la Chine, dans le cadre de la construction de nouvelles centrales fonctionnant au charbon, à recourir aux technologies les plus récentes, efficaces et respectueuses de l'environnement; invite en outre la Chine, dans le cadre de la construction de ces nouvelles centrales à recourir le plus rapidement possible à des technologies de combustion propre du charbon dites propres; invite la Chine à améliorer les conditions de sécurité en vigueur dans ses mines de charbon; invite la Commission à proposer la collaboration des entreprises européennes spécialisées en technologie minière; invite la Chine, en cas de construction éventuelle de nouvelles centrales nucléaires, à tirer profit de l'expérience et de la technologie européennes en matière de sûreté et à travailler en étroite collaboration avec les producteurs européens et les autorités, telle que l'Agence internationale de l'énergie atomique ;

If the original proposals had gone through, industry across the EU would have been decimated and workers thrown out of work – particularly in the construction industry, cement industry, mining and quite a lot of engineering industry – so thank goodness we have returned to some sort of sensible solution and moved back to the Council position where hearing protection can be taken into account when measuring decibel levels. I am glad we have moved back to the weekly measurement granted by Member States if they so deem necessary.
Si les propositions initiales avaient été approuvées, l'industrie de toute l'UE aurait été décimée et les travailleurs auraient perdu leur emploi - en particulier dans le secteur de la construction, l'industrie du ciment, l'industrie minière et une grande partie du secteur de l'ingénierie. Dieu merci, nous sommes maintenant revenus à une solution plus raisonnable et à la position du Conseil, qui permet de tenir compte de la protection auditive lors de la mesure des niveaux de décibels.
