The Commission’s answer to Question E‑4904/07 (and similarly E‑5602/07 and E‑5920/07) on the detection of chrome in the Asopos river and on drinking water in the regions of Oinofyta and Chasia states ‘the Commission has launched an own-initiative investigation case and has requested information to the Greek authorities in order to investigate whether the obligations arising from EC environmental legislation, i.e. Directive 2006/11/EC on pollution caused by certain dangerous substances discharged into the aquatic environment; Council Directive 80/68/EEC on the protection of underground water; Council Directive 91/689/EEC on the management of hazardous waste; Council Directive 98/83/EC on drinking water) have been complied with.
Dans les réponses qu'elles a données à la question E‑4904/07, ainsi qu'aux questions E‑5602/07 et E‑5920/07, qui portaient toutes sur la présence de chrome dans l'Asopos et dans l'eau potable des régions d'Inofyta et de Chassia, la Commission indique qu'elle a, de sa propre initiative, diligenté une enquête à ce sujet et demandé des informations aux autorités grecques afin de vérifier si la Grèce respectait les obligations qui découlent de la législation environnementale communautaire, et notamment des directives 2006/11/CE concernant la pollution causée par certaines substances dangereuses déversées dans le milieu aquatique, 80/68/CEE du Conseil concernant la protection des eaux souterraines, 91/689/CEE du Conseil relative à la gestion des déchets dangereux, et 98/83/CE du Conseil, relative à l'eau potable. Elle précise par ailleurs que cette enquête est actuellement en cours.

As regards the presumed pollution of the Asopos River, the Commission launched an own initiative investigation with the purpose of verifying whether Greece complies with its obligations under EC environmental law.
En ce qui concerne la pollution présumée de la rivière Asopos, la Commission a lancé une enquête de sa propre initiative dans le but de vérifier si la Grèce se conforme à ses obligations en vertu du droit communautaire de l'environnement.

The immediate aim of the Commission's action will be to ensure that the pollution of the Asopos River from dangerous substances be stopped so that the quality of drinking water for the neighbouring populations can be restored.

Nevertheless and quite apart from the issue of the parameter value for chromium, the Commission is very concerned about the current state of pollution of the Asopos River by hexavalent chromium, which the question of the Honourable Member refers to.
