Italian supported Libyan patrols in the Mediterranean fighting clandestine migration have reduced the number of migrants arriving in Italy, at the cost of human rights: in 2009 nearly 1000 persons were returned to Libya by Italy, after being rescued or intercepted at sea; according to the Italian Interior Minister, in the first 3 months of 2010 there was a 96% drop in arrivals compared with 2009.
