– having regard to the ASEAN Summit statement of 3 April 2012 concerning the outcome of the 1 April 2012 by-elections and calling for sanctions to be lifted,

E. whereas the conduct of the 1 April 2012 by-elections and the invitation to, and presence of, foreign observers and journalists, including a European Parliament representative, is proof of the willingness of the Government of Burma/Myanmar to continue its process of reforms, which should be sustainable and irreversible;

A. whereas on the 1st of April 2012 by-elections took place in order to fill up 44 vacant seats in the parliament; whereas 43 seats were won by the NLD and the elections were held in a fairly positive atmosphere despite some reports of irregularities and intimidation; whereas for that reason they cannot be considered genuinely free and fair;
A. considérant que des élections partielles ont eu lieu le 1 avril 2012 afin de pourvoir 44 sièges vacants au parlement; considérant que la LND a remporté 43 sièges et que les élections ont eu lieu dans une atmosphère relativement bonne, bien que certaines irrégularités et intimidations aient été signalées; considérant que, pour cette raison, elles ne peuvent être considérées comme réellement libres et équitables;

1. Calls on the government of Myanmar to respect the result of the 1 April 2012 by-elections and to make sure that the newly elected parliamentarians can take up their duties as soon as possible;

In its Resolution of 22 November 2012 on Elections to the European Parliament in 2014 , the European Parliament urged the European political parties to nominate candidates for President of the Commission, noting that it expected those candidates to play a leading role in the parliamentary electoral campaign, in particular by personally presenting their programme in all Member States of the Union.
