Definition: This block contains a wide variety of disorders that differ in severity and clinical form but that are all attributable to the use of one or more psychoactive substances, which may or may not have been medically prescribed. In contrast, the disorders brought together here are thought to arise always as a direct consequence of acute severe stress or continued trauma. The disorders in this section can thus be regarded as maladaptive responses to severe or continued stress, in that they interfere with successful coping mechanisms and therefore lead to problems of social functioning.

The extent to which the behavioural pattern is a function of low IQ or of organic brain damage is not known.
