The Council adopted a decision on the participation of the United Kingdom in certain provisions of the Schengen acquis pursuant to article 4 of the protocol integrating the Schengen acquis into the framework of the European Union which provides that "Ireland and the UK, which are not bound by the Schengen acquis may at any time request to take part in some or all of the provisions of the acquis".
