Other international legal instruments deal with children in conflict situation, in particular the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflicts[2], the Geneva Convention IV of 1949 relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in time of war[3], the Protocols I + II Additional to the Geneva Convention of 1949 and relating to the Protection of Victims of Armed Conflicts[4], all of which recognise specific needs of protection for children, together with the Statute of the International Criminal Court which defines as a war crime the enrolment of children under the age of 15 in national armed forces or the use of them as active participants in hostilities[5].
